Even quality leather and fabric wear down over time. Sometimes a simple repair is enough — but other times, it’s time for a full reupholstery. Here’s what to look for.
Large Tears, Oil Buildup, or Brittle Leather
If the leather has large tears, a heavy buildup of skin oil across a wide area — not just one spot — or the leather has become very dry and brittle, it usually can’t be restored with a standard repair. That’s a sign the material has reached the end of its life.
Cushions Have Lost Their Shape
If the filling or springs have sagged and the cushions no longer hold their shape even after fluffing, it’s time to replace the filling and upholstery — not just patch the cover.
The Frame Is Solid, But the Upholstery Isn’t
Often the frame of a piece is still sturdy and well-built, but the upholstery is outdated or too worn to save. In that case, reupholstering costs less than buying new furniture — a common reason clients bring us pieces from throughout Chicagoland.
Repeated Repairs Are No Longer Worth It
If the same spot has already been repaired more than once and keeps tearing again, at some point reupholstering that section is more reliable and cost-effective than another patch repair.
You Want a Different Color or Style
If you still love the frame and shape of your furniture but are tired of the color or style of the upholstery, reupholstering lets you refresh the look while keeping the piece you already own.
Not sure which one you need — a repair or a full reupholstery? We can take a look and recommend the right option, including leather and vinyl repair when a full reupholstery isn’t necessary.
